From metacritic. Vostrikov orders K to submerge past its maximum operational depth, then surface at full-speed to break through the Arctic pack-ice.
Protesting the dangerous maneuver, Polenin storms off the bridge. The test missile launches successfully. En route to the patrol zone, a reactor coolant pipe bursts.
Control rods are inserted to stop the reactor, but reactor temperature rises and the crew learns back-up coolant systems were not installed.
K surfaces to contact fleet command but the long-range transmitter antenna cable is damaged, possibly by the Arctic maneuver. Engineers rig a makeshift coolant system, working in shifts to limit radiation exposure.
The first team emerges vomiting and blistered; the second and third teams cool the reactor, but all suffer radiation poisoning.
With radiation levels rising, the submarine surfaces and most of the crew are ordered topside. Radtchenko balks after seeing the first team's injuries, and the crew chief takes his place on the third team.
The Soviet government grows concerned when the K ceases contact but is spotted near the destroyer. Hoping diesel submarines will be sent to tow the K , Vostrikov orders a return to port, but the pace could kill the entire crew.
The repaired pipework leaks and reactor temperature rises again, and torpedo fuel ignites a fire. Initially ordering the fire suppression system activated — which would suffocate anyone in the area — Vostrikov is talked down by Polenin, who personally assists the fire crew.
Two officers mutiny against Vostrikov, and Radtchenko enters the reactor alone to attempt repairs. Polenin deceives the mutineers into handing over their weapons, arrests them, and frees Vostrikov.
Unaware of Radtchenko, Vostrikov, at Polenin's behest, announces his plan to dive and attempt another repair, fearing an overheating reactor could set off their warheads and incite nuclear war.
The crew responds positively, and K dives. Radtchenko's repairs are successful, but blind and weakened by heavy radiation, he is dragged out by Vostrikov.
A meltdown is prevented, but irradiated steam leaks throughout the submarine. A Soviet diesel submarine reaches K , with orders to confine the crew on-board until a freighter can pick them up, but as it is too dangerous to stay, Vostrikov orders an evacuation, knowing he may lose his command and be sent to a gulag.
Returning to the Soviet Union, Vostrikov is tried for endangering the mission and disobeying a direct order, but Polenin comes to his defense.
An epilogue reveals Vostrikov was acquitted, but the K crew was sworn to secrecy and Vostrikov never given submarine command again.

Even after the K19 redesigns even in the west Soviet nuclear safety was more joke than reality. Decisions were made that would be unthinkable in US nuclear subs.
Unfortunately there was a "Cold War" on and the Soviet Union had to find a way to beef up its nuclear deterant. So the former Soviet Union did what it always did when put between a rock and a hard place militarily.
The soviets sacrficed safety and hurries a weapons system to "Readiness" in this case it was the K first in a long line of Soviet ballistic missile Hotel Class subs.
The sailors who manned her were expected to suffer any hardship for the sake of the motherland which this movie illustrates in unflinching detail. This K The Widowmaker DVD movie on its face appears shocking, evil and foolish to western sensibilities which is why in my review I provided a little background so you can watch this movie in its historical context.
The Soviet Union was a strong advisary indeed. The former Soviet Union had a formidable, credible nuclear deterent even in The Soviet Union shocked the United States with its launch of Yuri Gagarin into space because; it also signalled they had very advanced if basic rocket sciences.
Advanced rockets with huge lift capacity meant they could hurl huge nuclear weapons at communism's enemies in the west.
The United States is often a sleeping giant that once roused from its slumber is very effective at building the infrastructure needed to defend itself.
The USA not only eliminated the nuclear missile gap we developed the nuclear triad of land based sub based and air based delivery systems.
Now the Soviets were shocked and honestly frightened they had to answer what they saw as the new threat.
K19 was the answer. A sub rushed into development, rushed into service with two presurized water nuclear reactors favored for their small size and huge power outputs.
Neither of the K19's reactors was protected by even the most basic safety backups. So when disaster happened and the cooling system failed we had a disaster of epic scope that is the basis of this K The Widowmaker [Blu-ray] DVD.
Communism was the religion of the former Soviet state and any sacrifice made on the alter of communism was not only good but expected of all its adherents.
This movie reveals so pretty shocking stuff about the lengths the former Soviet Union went to keep this sub and its secrets.
What I found equally shocking is some of what happened after the story told by K The Widowmaker. Shocking is the K19 instead of being immediately scraped was indeed retrofitted and put back into service.
Equally shocking is the K19 a sub where so many men died was kept in service till it was finally decomissioned in the early 's. When I watch K The Widowmaker I realize that despite all the faults and flaws in our United States government, I am blessed to have been born here.
When I think of those poor men scacrified on the alter of communism in such a brutish way, I am shocked and saddened most profoundly. K The Widowmaker is entertaining while also informative.
On the level of the pure inhumanity of what happened on the K19 my heart cried right along with the sailors who lost their friends.
This was a very moving portrayal told with great sensitivity. This movie was not a box office success taking in far less in box office than it cost to make.
Hopefully the DVD sales will help K The Widowmaker break even because; this was a story that so totally had to be shared with the world so those sailors did not die in vain.
Robert I. Hedges Top Contributor: Pets. Set in at the height of the Cold War, "K The Widowmaker" is a beautifully filmed submarine epic from director Kathryn Bigelow that's based on actual events, though is not a direct historical interpretation like "Apollo 13," for instance.
I thought the majority of the cast was absolutely brilliant, particularly Liam Neeson, Peter Sarsgaard, and Christian Camargo in very challenging roles.
Unfortunately I found Harrison Ford to be Harrison Ford. Don't get me wrong, I like Harrison Ford, but here he comes across as a caricature of a Soviet submariner and sports a terrible Russian accent.
I appreciated his and certainly Bigelow and the crew's desire for authenticity, but his performance was stilted, and I thought Neeson was far more convincing in his role as the more paternal commander.
The film shows the heroism of the Russian submariners and especially the young reactor operators with great success, and some scenes that might have been cloying in a less capable director's hands work beautifully here watch for the excellent crucifix scenes, for instance.
While the film is largely a character study with Ford and Neeson as the main players, both are loyal Soviets and find themselves as uneasy teammates through an amazing plot.
The film candidly portrays the game of technological catch up the Soviets were playing at the time despite outward appearances to the contrary Sputnik, etc.
As radiation continues to build it's interesting to watch the shifting power structure in the boat, particularly as it relates to the Communist Party Officer onboard, which provides the most dramatic scene in the film.
It's also amazing to see the transformation from coward to hero in the young Reactor Officer, Lt. Vadim Radtchinko Peter Sarsgaard in a finely nuanced performance that will definitely make its mark on viewers.
The film features a brilliant epilogue that really shows the bonding of these cold warriors as a brotherhood like nothing else could.
The extras on the DVD are outstanding. The "Making of" feature was stunning; I couldn't believe they actually used a real Soviet submarine modified to look like the actual K that had been mothballed by the Russian navy.
Of particularly note in the film is the outstanding makeup; I appreciated the commentary a great deal, and the discussion of the makeup for the old age scenes and especially the radiation exposure scenes were excellent.
On the commentary cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth had many notable insights that are well worth listening to.
In particular I thought his greatest comment revealed the crux of the film better than any other synopsis could: "The submarine is the antagonist of the film.
While the film isn't perfect, overall it's a great movie that sheds light on the often misunderstood Soviet submarine program of the s, and I recommend it without reservation.
K which is based on a real event reveals the true nature of the Soviet attempts at modernizing their submarine fleet. By cutting corners and placing inexperienced men aboard their submarines in order to compete with America the Soviets paid a heavy price.
The captain played by Harrison Ford is charged with preparing the new boat and it's crew for sea trials. Liam Neeson, also a captain plays Ford's subordinate.
The crew has served under Neeson and are somewhat resentful of Ford's presence. The tension between the two men is evident when Ford makes what some aboard the boat consider rash and reckless decisions.
Despite this tension they successfully fire a test missile. Filled with elation they proceed to sail towards their assignment; the Eastern US Seaboard.
Confident that all is well the unthinkable happens. A leak causes the reactor to overheat. The scramble to make repairs is made worse by a lack of parts and a neophyte officer with minimal knowledge of the technology.
The boat and tensions heats up.Alle Rezensionen anzeigen. Doch es gibt Probleme.
